The new high-speed railway is part of the Danish "Timemodellen" (Hour Model), which will reduce travel times between major Danish cities to one hour.
With the Timemodellen, East and West Denmark is linked closer together. The new railway section over West Funen is part of the Timemodellen and consists of approx. 35 km of high-speed railway line constructed along the existing Funen Highway. The railway line is dimensioned for 250 km/h, but the project may be extended to include investigations of an increased speed of up to 300 km/h.
COWI is the main consultant for the outline design, which entails layout of the double-track railway section including track engineering, electrification and new signalling system as well as the design of bridges, fauna passages, noise screens, roads and drainage systems. The new railway also requires the construction of 27 road bridges and several landscape bridges across the hilly Funen landscape.
The new railway section project will be carried out together with technically strong partners: Danish Architects Gottlieb Paludan and GHB will supply landscape analysis and 3D visualisation, and French railway consultant SYSTRA will bring its international high-speed railway expertise.
