India already has extensive experience with onshore wind turbines, with an installed capacity of more than 20 gigawatts, but as part of its future effort to mitigate climate change, the country has now decided to exploit the potential for offshore wind energy as well.
India's first wind farm will exploit the great potential of the long Gujarati coastline to produce offshore wind energy.
Several European countries with vast knowhow in this field are supporting the initiative.
Preparations for the first 200-megawatt offshore demonstration windfarm are being financed by the European Commission and the windfarm is expected to be completed in 2020.
India’s plan is a call for 5,000 megawatts of offshore wind by 2022.
